Product Troubleshooting

Possible Troubleshooting

The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
If you have attempted to print an alignment page and notice that some of the blocks are shifted out of horizontal alignment, you will need to replace your printhead.

Please note that this issue is caused by the printhead and not the cartridges themselves.

In order to replace your printhead, please contact either the seller of your remanufactured cartridge or Lexmark.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
If you encounter an error stating that the cartridge cannot be recognized, please turn your printer off and disconnect the power supply. Leave unplugged for 2 minutes.

After 2 minutes, plug your printer back in and restart. If your printer is still not recognizing your cartridge, there may be a problem with the chip.

If you have a second cartridge that has not previously been used, install that into the printer.

If you do not have a second cartridge, you should return the cartridge to the place of purchase.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
To install your remanufactured cartridge in your printer, begin by removing the old cartridge from the printer.

Next, carefully remove the piece of tape covering the ink nozzle.

Now your cartridge may be installed into the printer.

*The cartridge and printer shown may vary from yours, but the general installation instructions are the same.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
Confirm that the cartridge pictured matches the cartridge you have in your hand or installed in your machine.

Confirm that the printer you are using is listed in the printer compatibility table as a suitable printer for the cartridge you are trying to install.

If ONE of these TWO criteria do NOT match, you have most likely received the incorrect cartridge for your printer. Please visit our PRINTER COMPATIBILITY page in order to determine what cartridge you need for your machine.

Once you have confirmed you have the correct cartridge for your printer, the first step is to remove the tape that covers the ink port on the cartridge.

Now your cartridge is ready to be installed into your printer.

If the cartridge is still not fitting into the machine after you have removed the tape, please make sure that you are installing your cartridge into the correct location in the printer. Please consult your printer’s user manual to learn how to correctly install your remanufactured inkjet cartridge.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
If you have just installed a cartridge and notice that the ink gauge displays low or no ink level, remove the cartridge from the printer and slowly reinstall.

If you are still experiencing a low ink message, turn your printer off and disconnect the power supply for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, plug the printer back in and power it back on.

If the ink level still does not show full at this point, there is a problem with the cartridge and it should be returned to the place of purchase.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
If you receive an error message stating "Interference with Cartridge Communication", please remove the cartridge showing the error from your printer.

Reinstall the cartridge paying careful attention to the installation instructions that are either on your printer or in your printer's user manual.

If you still receive an error after you have properly reinstalled the cartridge, please turn off your printer and disconnect the power source. Leave your printer unplugged for at least 2 minutes.

After 2 minutes, plug your printer back in and restart. If your printer is still not recognizing your cartridge, there may be a problem with the chip.

If you have attempted to print a document and get an error stating there is a printhead error or that your printhead is not recognized or missing, there may be a simple solution to fix this.

Please note that this issue is caused by the printhead and not the cartridges themselves.

  • On your printer, press the Setup button.
  • Scroll to Maintenance and press “ok”
  • Scroll to Replace Printhead and press “ok”
  • Open the printer lid and remove the cartridges from the printer. Lay them on their sides on a paper towel.
  • Remove the printhead from your printer.
  • You will need to locate the copper contacts on the back of the printhead and in your printer.
  • These contacts will need to be cleaned from any type of obstruction or debris as that may be the cause of the error. You may use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Gently brush the copper strip with the pencil eraser to remove any potential obstruction or debris. You may also use any type of lint free cloth such as a coffee filter. Again, gently wipe the copper strip with the lint free cloth removing any type of obstruction or debris.
  • Next, carefully clean the contacts inside of the printer.
  • Once this is complete, replace the printhead in the cradle.
  • Next replace the cartridges in the printer, close the lid and follow any on screen prompts that may appear. Press “ok” to align the printhead.

If the problem persists after returning the printhead to its cradle, you will want to reset your printer.

  • This can be done by turning off your computer and your printer with the printhead and cartridges installed.
  • Unplug your printer and leave your machines off for 2 minutes.
  • Restart the printer and your computer, and attempt your print again.

If you have attempted both of these procedures and you encounter the same error, there is most likely an electrical problem with the printhead, and you should contact Lexmark directly.
The cartridge and printer used in this video may not look identical to yours, but the same procedures used in this video may be used for the cartridge you have chosen to troubleshoot.
If you have printed a document and are unsatisfied with the print quality, first ensure that you have removed the tape that covers the ink port.

If the tape has been removed and the print quality is still unsatisfactory, you may need to perform a cleaning cycle in order to improve the quality of your print.

To perform a cleaning cycle, please do the following.

Please keep in mind that this process may vary by printer and that you may also consult your printer’s user manual for instructions on performing a cleaning cycle.
  1. Press the Setup Button on your printer.
  2. Scroll to Maintenance.
  3. Press OK
  4. Scroll to Clean Printhead
  5. Press OK
You will now observe your printer performing a cleaning cycle. Please note that the cleaning cycle may take several minutes to complete.

When the cycle is finished, your printer will print a test page.

If the print on your test page is satisfactory, you may return to the document you wish to print and resume printing.

If the print is still unsatisfactory, you may perform another cleaning cycle. Please be aware that cleaning your printhead does consume ink; and therefore, should only be completed when necessary.

If your test page is unsatisfactory after performing the cleaning cycles, you may need to replace your inkjet cartridge.
